7 Signs It's Time to See a Dermatologist
From stubborn rashes to hair loss to excessive sweating — here's your checklist for booking that appointment you've been putting off.

Most people visit a dermatologist reactively — when something looks wrong or won't go away. But dermatology isn't just about treating problems. It's also about catching things early, getting accurate diagnoses, and understanding your skin well enough to protect it.
Here are seven clear signals that it's time to book an appointment.
1. You Have a Mole or Spot That's Changed
Any change in a mole's size, shape, colour, or texture is worth investigating. The same goes for spots that bleed, crust, itch persistently, or fail to heal after a few weeks. These can be signs of skin cancer — the most common cancer diagnosed in the US — and early detection makes an enormous difference in how treatable it is.
Don't wait to see if it resolves on its own. Get it checked.
2. Your Acne Isn't Responding to Over-the-Counter Products
If you've been consistent with a skincare routine for two to three months and your skin isn't improving, a dermatologist can identify what's actually driving your breakouts and prescribe targeted treatment. This matters especially if your acne is cystic, painful, or starting to leave scars — all situations where earlier professional care leads to better long-term outcomes.
3. You Have a Rash That Persists or Keeps Coming Back
A rash that's been present for more than a couple of weeks, or one that keeps returning, is worth evaluating professionally. Recurring rashes can be signs of eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, or a fungal infection — conditions that look similar to one another but require very different treatments. Guessing the wrong one can make things worse.
4. Your Scalp or Hair Is Changing
Sudden hair loss, patchy thinning, an itchy or flaking scalp, or changes in hair texture can all point to conditions like alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, seborrheic dermatitis, or a nutritional deficiency. Hair loss in particular is easier to address when caught early — waiting often means harder recovery.
5. You Sweat Excessively
Sweating that goes beyond what exercise or heat would explain — soaking through clothes, experiencing wet palms constantly, or avoiding situations because of sweat — is a medical condition called hyperhidrosis, not a hygiene problem. It's treatable. Options range from prescription antiperspirants to Botox injections, which block sweat gland nerve signals for months at a time.
6. You've Never Had a Full-Body Skin Check
A professional skin exam once a year is a reasonable baseline for most adults. If you've never had one — or if it's been years — it's worth booking. Skin cancer doesn't always appear in places you can easily see, and the growths that become problems often started as something forgettable.
Annual checks are especially important if you have fair skin, a history of significant sun exposure, a family history of melanoma, or more than 50 moles.
7. Something Is Affecting Your Confidence or Quality of Life
Skin conditions carry a real psychological weight that's often underestimated. Rosacea, chronic eczema, psoriasis, hyperhidrosis, visible scarring — these aren't vanity concerns. They affect how people move through the world, and effective treatment exists for all of them.
If a skin condition is affecting your sleep, your social life, your self-image, or your daily comfort, that's more than enough reason to make an appointment.
Dermatology appointments are shorter than most people expect and offer a level of clarity that no amount of internet research can replicate. If you've been on the fence about booking — any of the above is reason enough.
